Juno in 2007Juno

Origin of her name:
Means "goddess of the moon and stars" in Roman mythology.
Her facial disk is moon-like and she's nocturnal.

Species:
Strix varia (Barred Owl)

Status as of November 1, 2015:
Okay to work. She wears permanent jesses, so you'll only need a swivel and leash when you go to get her on the glove.

Rescue & Rehabilitation Story:
Arrived from Carolina Raptor Center on August 7, 2004. Probably hit by a car resulting in vision impairment (blind in right eye), beak fracture (misaligned) and a factured toe. She is fully-flighted. She was rehabilitated at the CRC and transferred to Willowbrook.

Juno baiting
This is a photo of Juno baiting. Pat sent this photo in. A photography student took it when they were visiting Willowbrook. It shows the impressive wing span of raptors.

Favorite Stories:

From Anne Marie:

This past spring ('09), when the owls were hormonal - Juno flew at me, twice! It happened when I was cleaning her cage as an Animal Keeper. The first time I wasn't sure it was on purpose... the second time I was SURE it was on purpose. I often tell visitors how important it is to respect the power of these creatures - that their power is part of what makes them so wonderful. Having written that, if I'm honest, I have to say it's been a challenge to not let her intimidate me now. So far so good, but it's something I have to work at.
